:: Balances mood and may assist in relieving depression

5-HTP (hydroxylated form of the amino acid tryptophan) is a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin. The conversion of 5-HTP to serotonin may assist in relieving depression, improving sleep patterns and it has also been shown to have appetite-suppressing properties and thus may assist in promoting weight loss.

Additional Information: Depression

There is a vast difference between ‘feeling depressed’ and suffering from clinical depression. Clinical depression is unrelenting and overwhelming often with feelings of impending doom. However, some people with depression don’t feel sad at all but instead lifeless and empty. In this state, they are unable to experience pleasure even when
participating in activities they used to enjoy, they feel as if they’re just going through the motions. The signs and symptoms of depression can vary from person to person but may include: feelings of hopelessness; loss of interest in daily activities; self loathing; appetite and weight changes; sleep changes; loss of energy; irritability; aches and
pains; concentration problems; and distorted thinking.

Depression is not simply imagined. It is not a personality weakness and it cannot be “willed” away any more than a heart condition or diabetes can be “willed away.” It is a real medical disorder most likely resulting from chemical imbalances in the brain. A breakthrough in the treatment of depression came with the development of the SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor), the anti-depressants commonly recommended by doctors. These effective antidepressants work by increasing the serotonin level in the brain, many times found to be low in those with depression. SSRI can however have side effects. 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a natural alternative that may also increase the brain’s serotonin level and is a safer alternative. Exercise can also help those who are depressed since it increases the natural production of serotonin and dopamine the ‘good feel hormones’.
