Beta-sitosterol is found in almost all plants and cereal grasses and is derived from soluble wheat germ oil extracts. It is one of the main subcomponents of a group of plant sterols known as phytosterols. The average individual’s diet lacks this component only containing 200 to 300 mg of beta-sitosterol per day, which is not adequate.
Beta-sitosterol is thought to improve hormone production in the body, including growth hormone. It is also recommended to promote prostate health (helps with prostate problems like prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), it may reduce the growth of prostate and colon cancer cells and it also helps increase urine flow) and prevent male pattern baldness.
Beta-sitosterol has been known to reduce cholesterol levels due to its close chemical resemblance enabling it to block the absorption of cholesterol by competitive inhibition. When consumed with cholesterol it effectively blocks its absorption, resulting in lower serum cholesterol levels and improving lipoprotein (HDL, LDL) profiles. Beta-sitosterol
has the ability to emulsify fats; and is found to be 30 times more potent than choline when it comes to the breaking down of cholesterol deposits.
Beta-sitosterol may also give a boost to competitive athletes who often suffer from immune suppression and reduced inflammatory response during their intense training periods and competitions. Beta-sitosterol had been shown not only to boost their immunity but also noted to enhance lymphocyte proliferation and NK-cell activity. This is particularly useful to people who are physically stressed, medically unwell or recovering from illness. Beta-sitosterol may also assist in normalizing blood sugar and insulin levels by stimulating the release of insulin in the presence of non-stimulatory glucose concentrations.
