The prostate gland is a doughnut shaped gland around the urethra (urinary Outlet). Contraction of the prostate squeezes fluid from the prostate into the urethral tract during ejaculation. Prostatic fluid makes up the bulk of semen. Three conditions can cause problems with the prostate: Prostatitis, which is inflammation of the prostate gland, benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), which is a gradual enlargement of the prostate without cancer (as a result of hormonal changes), and thirdly, prostate cancer.
